Sea Scouts sail with Young-entrepreneurs
In an effort to raise funds to support their sailing program, the Colombo Sea Scouts are adding enterprise education to the skills courses for their young sailors. Colombo Sea Scouting continues to offer young people responsible fun and adventure. They also instill in young people lifetime values and develop in them ethical character as expressed in the Sea Scout Oath and Law.
Training of young people in citizenship, service, and leadership is part of the program. They also serve Colombo's communities and families with its quality, value-based program.
"By collaborating with Young Entrepreneur - Sri Lanka (YESL), The Junior Achievement International affiliate, we expect to also train our members in entrepreneurial activities to create, self-funding opportunities for the group as well as expand the reach of the program" said Hiran Jayasinghe, Sea Scout Commodore.
For example, Business people are also being offered an advertising opportunity, which will benefit them as well as the Scouts. A sponsoring business can purchase an Optimist Sailing Dingy for the Scouts and have their company logo and company name prominently carried on the gunnels and sail of one of the Sea Scouts Optimist Dingys.
"We will sail these boats on the Beira Lake in the heart of Colombo. This is an eye catching way to get their customers attention", Captain Jayasinghe said.
"A business can become a sponsor by covering the cost of Rs. 82,400 for an Optimist Dingy for the organization. Each time a sponsored boat is used on the water the Company makes an impression.
Companies that avail themselves of this opportunity, gain advertising prominence and at the same time, help in the development of our youth".
The boats are quality built by Neil Marine. Sea Scouts member: learn to sail, to row, and to keep a boat in shape.
They are active in camping. social events, tours, regattas. excursions, and seamanship contests. They also have a chance to develop maritime and enterprise skills that can lead to careers later on.
